Family Mealtimes: Fun Games to Spark Connection at the Table

In the midst of busy schedules, extracurriculars, and screen time, family mealtimes offer a powerful opportunity to slow down and reconnect.

More than just a chance to refuel our bodies, shared meals are moments to nurture emotional bonds, build communication skills, and create lasting memories.

But seriously, getting kids to engage at the dinner table isn’t always easy.

Sometimes mealtimes can feel rushed and distracted, especially after a long day. That’s where a little creativity comes in! Incorporating simple games and activities can turn meals into playful, meaningful moments of connection.

Try these simple activities to engage with your child(ren) over meal times:

I SPY

A classic game that never gets old! One person starts with “I spy with my little eye, something that is…” and gives a clue about something they see. It encourages attention to detail, vocabulary, and observation—all while keeping the mood light and fun.

Tic-Tac-Toe (Napkin Edition)

All you need is a napkin and a pen or even a reusable board from home. Kids love the competition, and it’s a great way to practice turn-taking and strategy.

Would Rather (Kids’ Addition)

This one gets kids thinking and talking. Take turns asking silly or thoughtful “Would You Rather” questions, like:

  • Would you rather have a pet dragon or a pet unicorn?
  • Would you rather eat only pizza or only ice cream for a week?

Animal Sounds Game

Take turns making an animal sound and have others guess what it is. You can also turn it into a guessing game:

  • “I’m thinking of an animal that goes moo. What is it?”
  • “I’m thinking of an animal that hops and says ribbit…”

Young children love this sensory game, and it’s great for language development and attention.

Children thrive on routine and connection. Mealtimes don’t have to be perfect or elaborate, they just need to be consistent and intentional. When we bring playfulness and presence to the table, we communicate to our kids: You matter. I see you. I enjoy being with you.

So the next time you sit down for a meal, try adding a little fun.

A round of “I Spy” or a silly animal game might just be the highlight of your child’s day and yours too.
